I have followed your steps 3 times and double checked as many times. And I’m still getting the “You don’t have permission to access / on this server.” I have set up 2 virtual host in addition to the default one for the document root. when I type “http://standupspace.dev” (which is the name of the server that I have in the virtual host file and in the host file) I get that error up there. what am I doing wrong? Any one? More information upon request. (miur)

Ola, you should be able to reset the browser cache to resolve this issue of XAMP redirecting to the homepage. If all else fails restart your system, I had the same thing happen to me, I found restarting cleared it up.

Nice guide!
Though I’m new to Mac I’m not new to hosting web servers. I have configured servers both for windows and Linux. But here I’m not really where I want to be. My problem is that when I’ve configured all the settings and try to fire one of the virtual host addresses the default page for XAMPP is launched. Also I’ve excluded the line that includes the xampp.conf file, but with no effect. I’m runnng version 1.7.2a of XAMPP.

Any ideas?

Nice write up hunter, personally for windows I would recommend winamp. It makes creating aliases very easy and install is super easy, it's what I use. In spite all the hype of MAC being a developers machine I think its far easier to get apache, php, and mysql up and running on a windows box (same goes for Rails development, .NEt development, etc., etc.). I wrote this article while working for a job that gave out apple netbooks. Just the fact that you need an entire article to set up php, apache, and mysql proves what a lame machine the Mac is IMHO.
